Apple's Smartwatch Bands Under Fire for PFAS Exposure
Share
Apple is facing a lawsuit over claims that its smartwatch bands contain high levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals." The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California, specifically targets the Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band, which are marketed as being made from fluoroelastomer but allegedly contain harmful chemicals.
While Apple promotes its smartwatches as health-focused devices, concerns have arisen about prolonged skin contact with PFAS, which are linked to serious health risks. These chemicals are commonly found in nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and personal care products, making them difficult to avoid.
PFAS and Fertility Risks
Research has shown that PFAS can disrupt hormones, reduce ovarian reserve, and increase the time it takes to conceive. Women exposed to high levels of these chemicals may also face a higher risk of pregnancy complications such as miscarriage and preterm birth.
To limit exposure, consider switching to PFAS-free cookware, filtering drinking water, avoiding personal care products with perfluorinated compounds, and researching wearable products before purchasing.
With growing awareness of PFAS-related risks, consumers are pushing for greater transparency and safer alternatives in everyday products.
